Prints Along the Path

David Morgan's first prints grew out of a fascination with medieval art, especially carving and sculpture, and a desire to somehow rediscover, celebrate, and share the exuberant wonder of sculpture created almost a thousand years ago. He still loves exploring those images, but these days he spends more time in the here and now as well, exploring the visual wonder of the contemporary world with – and beyond – more representational work.

David's creative journey has taken many curious paths. It began with photography in the 1960s, when it was still done with silver and light (but in the dark). He's studied art, and other things, at Colorado College, the University of New Mexico, the University of Manchester (UK), and the Massachusetts College of Art. Always attracted to printmaking, David has been fortunate enough to work with some wonderful mentors, including photographer Frank Newlander and printmakers Jean Gumpper, Siri Beckman, Matt Brown, and Jim Lee.

David's path has also gone on to include sifting through earth and time as an archaeologist; many years of working with wood in all its forms, from house framing to hand-carved furniture; and then working with living trees and ecosystems as a practitioner of ecological restoration. Now it’s circled back to visual art. His print studio, the Merrymeeting Press, opened in downtown Bath in 2015 and is now located at 40 Lemont Street in Bath.
